Hooi Den Huan: If you cannot do what you like, then try to like what you have
to do.

A popular saying familiar to most of Chinese netizens in recent years is “If you cannot escape from an inevitable rape, then just close your eyes and learn to enjoy it.” Cruel and dirty as it is, people seldom would mention this in public even if it might be a most appropriate comment in some situations. Instead, they will speak it out with a tone of kidding, indirect and with a mood of euphemism.

Professor Hooi Den Huan will not, and he just expressed his idea in Tuesday’s lecture directly, but in a more understandable way, not that cynically.

If you believe that the way of expressing reflects exactly the characteristic of a person, then you will see why Professor Hooi has been welcomed by so many students. Students love him because he speaks fast, direct, concise and alway to the point. So simple to express himself and to explain the cases and corresponding theories that are always not so simple to comprehend. I would like to call it The True Harvard Way.

Professor Hooi always smiles and sometimes laughs. He does so and he must be very happy as what I can guess from his expressive and lovely head. He is happy in front of the students who admire him for his teaching and for the books he co-authored with Marketing guru Kotler and Kartajaya, and is also happy for the coming book as a co-operation with Kartajaya(Guess what? I heard the news in his mini-van when he kindly offered Dei and me a free lift in Tuesday’s evening). But he isn’t a man of arrogance and haughtiness just because of those books. Instead, when commenting on the best seller “Rethinking Marketing”, he said to us in a peaceful tone, “It (Rethinking Marketing) has been translated into multiple language versions and became a best-seller not because of me, but because of Philip Kotler and Hermawen Kartajaya.” A man who keeps a low profile is surely a humble and modest man who deserves more respects.

Being a non-Marketing major as he was, Professor Hooi was picked  accidentally out of a group of accounting faculty from NUS to participate in the newly established marketing department of NBS in the early years of Nanyang Technological University. After years of hard-working and for his talent, he has published many articles and books and thus established his status in marketing academic field. But, referring to what he told us in that direct manner, has he been doing what he likes? Or he tried to like what he was choosen to do and devoted himself to it since and is now entitled to our admiration and respect?

Passion is something to drive people forward tirelessly, not stable all the time, but perseverance keeps people determined towards a set goal endlessly. Den gave us lectures in Harvard way, but young people as we are now should learn the lecture of life in Hard way. A nice teacher as he is and as whom Dei, one of Hooi’s students believed to be, is not only a lecturer for students, but a mentor ahead in the road as well.
